Over 35 Years of Service, Community & Heritage
Since 1989, the Association of Jamaican Nurses of Greater Houston has been a beacon of support, mentorship, and community for Jamaican nurses and healthcare professionals in the Houston area. Our journey is one of dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to our members and the communities we serve.
A Gathering That Started It All
Mrs. Desrene Harvey hosted a welcome reception for four Jamaican nurses recruited by Mrs. Monica Rudder to work at MD Anderson Cancer Center. From that gathering grew a vision for something greater.
Formally Established
After several meetings, the Association of Jamaican Nurses was formally established. Mrs. Lena Dietrich was elected as the first president.
JFH Scholarship Program Launched
The JFH Scholarship Program was launched, providing financial support to nursing students of Jamaican heritage pursuing their education in the Greater Houston area.
Expanded Health Fairs & Jamaica Outreach
AJN expanded its community health fairs and deepened its outreach to Jamaica, strengthening ties between Houston and the island through healthcare and humanitarian support.
AJN has grown from a small support network into a recognized non-profit with an annual scholarship program, community health fairs, hospital donation drives, and deep ties to Houston and Jamaica — reflecting 35+ years of service.
